Neuralink is Elon Musk’s secretive company which develops brain-machine interface, showed off its technology to the public for the first time. The goal of the company is to begin implanting devices in paralyzed humans which allows them to control phones or computers.
The first big advance is flexible “threads,” which are less likely to damage the brain than the materials currently used in brain-machine interfaces. These threads also create the possibility of transferring a higher volume of data, according to a white paper credited to “Elon Musk & Neuralink.” The abstract notes that the system could include “as many as 3,072 electrodes per array distributed across 96 threads.”
The threads are 4-6 micrometres thin which is thinner than human hair, another advantage being that the machine automatically embeds them.
Elon Musk gave a presentation not for creating a hype but encouraged people to apply for work for Neuralink. Scientists from Neuralink hope to use a laser beam through the skull instead of the traditional method of drilling holes through the skull. After conducting prior experiments they hope to have this in human patients by the end of next year. Elon Musk also revealed the result that a monkey was able to control a computer with its brain. He added that it is not suddenly that Neuralink will have a neural lace and take over people’s brain but ultimately wants to create a technology which allows merging with AI.
Matthew Nagle was the first person with spinal cord paralysis to receive brain implant which allowed him to control a computer cursor back in 2006 and also played Pong using only his mind. As a part of the research, paralyzed people with implants have moved robotic arms and brought objects into focus by a system called BrainGate.
Neuralink has emerged as a result of a long history of academic research and that no existing technology is in lines with the company’s goal of reading neural spikes. BrainGate relied on Utah Arraywhich are stiff needles with 128 electrode channels which meant less data being picked up and stiffer channels. This problem has been solved by using a thinner polymer in Neuralink.
Neuralink technology is difficult to implant precisely but to combat the difficulty they have developed a neurosurgical robot capable of inserting 192 electrodes per minute. It also avoids blood vessels, which may lead to less of an inflammatory response in the brain. Bandwidth is a problem for interacting with AI as you can take in information more quickly than you can push it out via voice but you are already connected to the machine so this system allows quick communication with machines directly from the brain.
Right now the chip can only communicate data with a wired connection but their ultimate goal is to create a system to work wirelessly. The wireless product called the N1 SENSOR will transmit data wirelessly and Nerualink plans to implant 4 of these in the brain with 3 in motor areas and 1 in the somatosensor area and will be connected to a device mounted behind the ear. This will eliminate the need for general anaesthesia through non-invasive experience however there is a whole FDA process to be done. It is currently testing on rats to check the stability of the system and ensuring high bandwidth brain connection and flexible threads to make it record more neurons and precise outcomes.
South Texas will witness the most ambitious test launch of SpaceX with a shiny Mars rocket prototype. Over the past 8 months, workers have been working upon a coastal launch site to prepare the stout and three-legged prototype for testing. It is made of stainless steel and have the shape of a badminton shuttlecock and is equipped with the next-gen Raptor rocket engines.
Elon Musk has named his company’s six-story tall rocket ship as “Starhopper” as it is made to hop to altitudes no higher than 3 miles but not to fly into space. The Starship is a 400-foot tall launch system for the powerful Starhopper. The company’s vision lies in taking dozens of people to Moon and Mars, deploying many satellites at a time and rocketing people around Earth for a few minutes. The Starhopper was fired up in April for the first time and the vehicle was lifted for no more than a few inches and subsequent tests lifted it further but not by much.
The engineers are hoping to take the vehicle up to 20 meters above its own height and Musk also added that the Starhopper will move sideways and land back on its launch pad. SpaceX spokesperson said that the hop and hover test is a series of tests designed to push the limits of the vehicle as quickly and as fast as possible within safety limits.
SpaceX will launch Star hopper from 14:00-20:00 Hours CT on 16th July. The schedule for launch can be quite dynamic and subject to change with development programs. The company will flow liquid oxygen through the engine to check for plumbing and hardware and a static fire test attempt on Monday if everything works out fine. The static fire test would add methane to flowing oxygen to ignite and burn the Raptor Engine for a matter of seconds to check its functioning. The launch site is located near Boca Chica Beach in South Texas. Spacehopper was confirmed by Musk in late 2018.
It marks the beginning of the Starship Program. It is building a Mark 1 Starship (Mk1) prototype which is designed to reach the orbit. Mk1 Starship is hopeful to reach 20km up in a few months but the issued government license allows experimental vehicles up to 5Km and lasting up to 6 minutes. It is working on regulatory approval for the prototypes. The company plans to launch prototypes into orbit by end of 2020 and a full-scale Starship to the moon by 2023 and a manned mission to Mars by 2026.

Elon Reeve Musk was born on 28th June in the year 1971. He was born in the city of Pretoria, South Africa and then moved to Canada to attend the Queen’s University – one of the top schools in Ontario. Musk was a child to a South African father named Errol Musk who was an engineer by profession and a Canadian mother named Maye Musk who was a nutritionist and a model.
He exhibited early computer and entrepreneurial talents. Musk was fascinated by science fiction and computers in his teenage years. When he was twelve, he developed the code and programming for his own video game and immediately sold the prospects to a company.
Musk left South Africa in 1988 after acquiring a Canadian passport because he was reluctant to help dictatorship through compulsory military service and because he was searching for higher financial prospects in the United States. Musk went to Canada and studied at Queen’s University.
In the year 1992 Musk left Canada and went to the USA. Musk studied business and physics at the Pennsylvania University in Philadelphia. He then graduated with a degree in economics and continued to pursue a second bachelor’s degree in Physics. After completing his courses at Penn, he went on for a Ph.D. in the subject of Energy Physics from Stanford University.
This drastic shift was completely and totally timed with the Internet boom, and after just two days of joining he dropped out of Stanford to become a major part of the internet boom, starting his first business, the Zip2 Corporation. The company developed and marketed an Internet city guide for the newspaper publishing industry. Zip2 soon began providing content for the newly curated websites of the famous Chicago Tribune and The New York Times. But then Compaq acquired Zip2 for around 341 million USD in February 1999.
Just one month after selling Zip2 Musk co-founded X.com which then went on to become PayPal after merging with Confinity in 2000. In October 2002, PayPal was acquired by eBay for a whopping 1.5 billion USD in stocks out of which Musk got 165 million USD. Then Musk went on to set up, own and lead massive companies. SpaceX, the space transportation company founded by Elon Musk successfully launched 60 of its Starlinksatellites. If everything goes properly, then the Starlink network of satellites can provide superfast internet connectivity across the globe.
Before the launch of the satellites from Cape Canaveral, Florida, SpaceX announced that Starlink will make the entire earth connected through reliable and cheap broadband connectivity.
The first Starlink mission was broadcast by SpaceX which was launched by a Falcon 9 rocket at 10:30 pm ET on 24th May. Just over an hour of the liftoff, all the 30000 pounds of satellites were deployed by the rockets’ upper stage. This is the heaviest payload which the SpaceX has launched till date.
The release of spacecrafts took place 440 kilometres above the Earth’s surface over the Indian Ocean. The method of deployment was described as odd yet efficient by Elon Musk, as it managed to launch 60 satellites at once. Usually, during a multi-satellite deployment process, a device present at the uppermost stage of the rocket deploys them one after the another with the help of complex spring mechanisms. In December, SpaceX successfully deployed 64 satellites in this way with the help of one rocket.
However this time, a different process was followed by SpaceX. The rocket’s upper stage was spun resembling that of a baseball pitch and slowly the whole stack of Starlink satellites were launched. A SpaceX engineer, Tom Praderio commented that since they are no deployment mechanisms present, the satellites are actually launched like a deck of cards.
The size of an individual satellite is almost that of an office desk and its weight is closely 500 pounds. It is equipped with solar panels and has antennas present for transmission of data. Besides that, the spacecraft has an ion enginewhich releases krypton gas. It would prevent the Starlink satellite colliding with other satellites and avoid space junk. Once it nears its useful life, it would self-destruct. The engine will also power the satellite to an orbit of 550 kilometres above Earth.
However, the present batch of satellites lack a major component, laser beam interlinks. The future satellites will have these lasers for connecting with other four satellites. In this way, it will form a strong mesh network over Earth facilitating the internet speed almost to that of light’s speed in a vacuum. It is almost 50% greater than fibre-optic cables giving the Starlink satellites a great advantage over the current status.
SpaceX aims to deploy 12000 similar satellites before the deadline of 2027 set by the Federal Communications Commission. For reaching this goal, SpaceX needs to launch more than a mission per month through the next eight years. However, for making the concept work and generate revenue, it needs to launch only 1000 satellites which is way less than 12000.
Elon Musk was asked for an update on Neuralink, the neuro-tech company he started in 2016, to which he replied with a tweet saying “Coming Soon.” Though started almost three years ago, there have not been any major announcements from the company. The company has been reported to developing implantable brain-computer interfaces(BCI) and is located at San Francisco, California.
Brain-computer interfaces provide a pathway for direct communication between an advanced brain and an external machine. Research on BCI first started in the 70s at the UCLA, after which it was offered a contract from DARPA. It primarily attempts to restore damaged hearing, eyesight and other motion activities with the help of advanced neuroprosthetics equipment. Neuroprosthetics such as cochlear implant have been widely used in people but they differ in some areas from BCI. While the neuroprosthetics make a connection of any part of the nervous system to a device, BCI attempts to connect the central nervous system( or brain) to a computer.
Neuralink primarily aims to manufacture devices which will help in treating severe brain diseases and brain damage that has been caused by a stroke. In the long run, it aims to make equipment for overall human enhancement.
The inspiration of this company came from a concept in science fiction named Neural Lace, which is in the fictional world created by author Iain M. Banks in his series of books The Culture. In the futuristic world of Culture, there are aliens, advanced beings, humanoids who live in places spread all over our galaxy, Milky Way.
Elon Musk has been quite vocal about the dangers which artificial intelligence pose to the human civilization and he has said that human beings have to augment their brains for survival in the coming times. Neuralink published a paper in 2015 describing a concept for the BCI. It explained the process of augmenting the human brain with a circuit. But the path is filled with dangers such as ethical mistakes, health side effects and scientists have warned that future advancements can result in manipulation of a person’s emotions, thoughts which is certainly not permissible.
Tesla has revealed its plans of launching a cab sharing network consisting of only self-driven cars. Tesla held an ‘Autonomy Day’ for promoting the driverless system to its investors. Apart from this, they also revealed the “Full Self Driving” computer chip which is the best chip right now according to its CEO Elon Musk.
This self-driving machine has been in the discussion for years now and the company also declared that the previously named “Autopilot Hardware 3.0” is in production and it has been already installed in the Model S and X vehicles. Pete Bannon, Head of Tesla Autopilot Division said during the presentation that the hardware developed by them possesses an improvement factor of 21 in fps processing against the previous model.
The chip production is being handled by Samsungin Austin, Texas. The CEO is optimistic about Tesla that the software which will have everything needed to conquer the self-driven system will be completed by the end of this year. He also explained that this version will need a bit of attention of a driver but he says it will stop by Q2 2020. After this Tesla will start working on a fully driverless system and Musk is sure that this will be released by the end of next year. Tesla has planned to launch a Robotaxi network by providing an update to its present mobile application.
The Tesla owners can also add their cars and earn money from the app or they can choose any random Tesla car to pick or leave them in their destination. Musk studied very intensely in economics about the fully self-driven car from both the Tesla perspective and Tesla’s owner’s perspective. Now Tesla’s vehicle’s hardware is developed as per his studies and what he presumes to achieve the goal of the fully self-driven car by giving updates to the software. He also approximated that the values of the cars based on self-driven networks are of $200,000 minimum whereas Tesla is selling cars having values of the maximum range of $50,000. He also roughly calculated that these cars can be seen everywhere by the end of next year.
Musk also said that buying any self-driven cars other than Tesla can be a loss to the buyers because there will be no fully self-driven car other than this. Tesla convinced very well by giving their presentation on how fully self-driven system is more safer than normal cars.
